An Adams County mansion is a total loss after a massive four-alarm fire ripped through the Straban Township house Saturday morning.

The fire was dispatched just before 8 a.m. on the 800 block of Pond Bank Road, according to Adams County 911 records.

No one was home at the time of the fire, said Heidlersburg Volunteer Fire Company Deputy Chief Wendell Herr, with the owner of the home currently in Texas.

Herr confirmed no one was injured in the initial fire, though several firefighters have had minor slips and falls during cold, icy conditions. No one has required transport by EMS, Herr said. No animals were inside the home itself, Herr said. A horse on the farm of the property was not injured.

According to online listings of the home on Zillow and Realtor.com, the home is reported at roughly 9,900 square feet and valued at over two million dollars.

The house is a total loss, according to Herr.

The fire was initially reported to Adams County dispatch as a fire alarm, Herr said. Deputy Chief Herr responded to the scene in his personal vehicle, and upon arriving on the property, saw fire showing from the front center of the massive house.

With the size of the home and volume of fire on arrival, firefighters were placed at a significant disadvantage, Herr said.

“The only thing that could have saved that house is a sprinkler system,” Herr said, explaining that the large rooms of the house allowed the fire to grow significantly before firefighters were even dispatched. “It had such a headstart on us.”

Herr recommended that owners of larger homes consider sprinkler systems, which assist in confining the fire to individual rooms of a structure before the fire is even dispatched.
